Theatre in Education

Fingers Burnt explores the causes and effects of anti-social behaviour, using Halloween and Bonfire Night as its backdrop.

The forty-five minute performance, for young people in year 6, 7 & 8 charts the experiences of the three young people. An explosive week of eggs, flour and fireworks which has tragic consequences.

The performance is accompanied by a workshop where young people can work with the actors to consider the themes of the play, the choices made by the characters and the consequences of these.

The whole session is an invaluable tool for teachers in exploring:

- friendship and peer pressure
- nuisance behaviour / anti-social behaviour
- the influence of alcohol
- illegal purchase of and misuse of fireworks
- transition and change

The performance has been written and designed so that it appeals to a broad spectrum of young people and should allow everyone in the audience to associate and engage with at least one of the characters. The scenes portrayed are recognisable for a young audience and the language and topical references are designed to be easy for young people to engage with.

The performance and workshop is aimed at pupils in year 7 (aged 11 and 12). This age group has been targeted because they are in a unique and vulnerable position, having just made the transition from primary to secondary school. The performance is also available for years 6 & 8 and has toured these year groups with great success.

Fingers Burnt is available each year in September, October and November as it is at this time of year that young people are forming relationships, making new friends and developing a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them.  It is at this formative age that young people can make decisions which affect the rest of their lives, as we see from the choices that all three characters make in the play.

"Fingers Burnt was a triumph.  One of the best educational plays I have seen and great value for money.  The children in our area who were lucky enough to watch the play were captivated, amused and enlightened by its content.  The play was pitched at exactly the right level for the audience: just enough familiarity with their own lives and just enough sadness and shock-factor to make an impact.  I know the teachers were as moved as me by some of the insightful comments made by the children.  It was clear they were going to have some interesting things to tell their parents that evening."

“Fingers Burnt is a powerful, moving and intense drama which will leave a lasting impression on anyone who watches it.  Adults and children will find this production thought-provoking and relevant.  I commend it to anyone with an interest in the future well-being of young people.”
  Andy Glover, Rochdale Trading Standards.
“Fantastic, highly appropriate for age group and the message couldn’t have been stronger. The children absolutely loved it, they were engrossed in all aspects of it. They said ‘It’s the best play we’ve ever seen!’”
